BURNT SUGAR – Avni Doshi

In my opinion, the author did an excellent work exploring the love/hate relationship between a mother and daughter. Not only that, there’s elements of betrayal, revenge and forgiveness that takes you on a whirl wind of emotions as you read on. Tara, the mother, was the one living with dementia but we got to understand the confusion and frustration of Antara (the daughter) being trapped in a never ending cruel circle. I felt a sense of unease as the book uncovers the emotions of dysfunctional familial relationships to extremes but I was also annoyed at how elusive the storyline was in some parts. The relationship defined in this book was so far from what I could relate to which is why, for me,it made the relationship so unrealistically represented.
